What is athlete’s foot?
Athlete's foot (also called tinea pedis), is an infection caused when various types of fungus invade the skin. It usually occurs between the toes but can also occur on the bottom and sides of the feet. It is highly contagious and can spread to other parts of the body, causing jock itch. How do I get athlete's foot?
Athlete's foot is most commonly contracted by coming into contact with an infected person or an object/surface that has a fungus on it. Walking barefoot in locker rooms, public pools, or shower areas may increase the risk of contracting athlete's foot.
People are most susceptible to athlete's foot when their feet are sweating or lack proper ventilation. Shoes create the ideal environment for fungus growth, as they provide a warm and moist environment.
What are the symptoms of athlete's foot?
Athlete's foot can present as any one, or a combination of these symptoms:
• Itching
• Burning
• Scaling
• Cracking
• Discomfort
• Redness

How can I help prevent athlete's foot?
The following tips will help prevent most athlete’s foot:
- Wash feet daily with soap
- Keep feet dry, including between the toes
- Do not share shoes or towels with others
- Avoid walking barefoot in public areas. Wear shoes, flip-flops or sandals in locker rooms or common shower areas
- Change shoes and socks each day or more often when they get wet. Wear socks that keep your feet dry and wear well-fitting, ventilated shoes
In addition to the tips above, you can apply Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Daily Prevention Deodorant Powder Spray or Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Daily Prevention Medicated Foot Powder 1-2x daily to help prevent most athlete's foot. Directions vary by product. Read product label prior to use.

Can I get athlete's foot if I've already had it before?
Yes, you can get athlete’s foot even if you’d had it before. Prevention products, such as Lotrimin®AF Daily Prevention, can help prevent the flare-ups.
How does Lotrimin® cure athlete's foot?
Clotrimazole and Miconazole Nitrate work by reducing and stopping fungal growth through fungistatic action during treatment. Butenafine Hydrochloride works through fungicidal action during treatment.
The following Lotrimin® products cure most athlete’s foot:
- Lotrimin Ultra® Athlete’s Foot Cream (Butenafine Hydrochloride)
- Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Antifungal Cream (Clotrimazole 1%)
- Lotrimin® AF treatment powders and sprays (Miconazole Nitrate 2%)
Lotrimin® relieves symptoms associated with athlete's foot such as itching, burning and cracking.
How long should I treat my athlete's foot?
To cure most athlete's foot between the toes, apply Lotrimin Ultra® twice daily for 1 week (or once per day for 4 weeks). You can also use Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot products twice a day for four weeks to treat athlete’s foot. Disappearing symptoms does not imply that the condition is cured. Therefore, it is important to continue full course of treatment as described in the product labeling. Once you have treated your athlete’s foot, you can use Lotrimin® AF Daily Prevention products once or twice daily to help prevent a reoccurrence of most athlete's foot.
Is athlete's foot contagious?
Athlete's foot is highly contagious and can spread to other parts of the body.
What form of athlete's foot treatment is best?

What is jock itch?
Jock itch is a highly contagious skin infection, also called tinea cruris, caused by various types of fungus, similar to those that cause athlete's foot. It infects the surrounding areas of the groin and inner thighs. Learn more about jock itch.
How do I get jock itch?
- Jock itch is most commonly contracted by coming into contact with clothing or towels contaminated with the fungus. It can also spread from an athlete’s foot outbreak.
- Jock itch may also be caused by the spread of athlete's foot fungus to the groin area.
- The groin area provides a warm and humid environment, which encourages fungus growth.
- Excessive perspiration can also encourage fungus growth.
What are the symptoms of jock itch?
Jock itch can present as any one or a combination of the following symptoms:
• Itching

How can I treat jock itch?

What is ringworm?
Ringworm is a contagious infection, also called tinea corporis, that occurs on the surface of the skin. It is caused by various types of fungus, similar to those that cause athlete's foot. The name comes from the characteristic ring that appears on the infected person's skin. The condition has nothing to do with actual worms. School-age children are commonly affected.

What is Lotrimin® used for?
Lotrimin® offers a range of products to manage athlete's foot. Lotrimin Ultra® cures most athlete's foot between the toes and Lotrimin® AF products treat most athlete’s foot. Lotrimin® AF Daily Prevention with Tolnaftate helps prevent most athlete’s foot when used as directed. Lotrimin® Sweat & Odor Control helps relieve irritation, absorb sweat and fights odor. Lotrimin® products are not effective on the scalp or nails.
How long does it take for Lotrimin® products to work?
For athlete's foot:
- Lotrimin Ultra® Athlete’s Foot Cream – prescription strength, cures most athlete's foot between the toes when used 2x per day for 1 week, or 1x per day for 4 weeks.
- Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Antifungal Cream – cures most athlete’s foot when used 2x per day for 4 weeks.
- Lotrimin® AF Athlete’s Foot Deodorant Powder Spray – cures most athlete’s foot when used 2x per day for 4 weeks.

How do Lotrimin® treatment products work?
Lotrimin® and Lotrimin Ultra® provide several options to treat most athlete’s foot, jock itch and ringworm with different antifungal medications, including:
- Clotrimazole/Miconazole Nitrate– Both Clotrimazole and Miconazole Nitrate medications are azole antifungals. They work by reducing and stopping fungal growth through fungistatic action during treatment.
- Butenafine Hydrochloride – Butenafine is used to treat fungus infections. It works through fungicidal action during treatment.
Can Lotrimin® be used on children?
Lotrimin Ultra® can be used on adults and children 12+.
